Courtroom Etiquette at Hocking County Municipal Court and Common Pleas

Hocking County Desk · 2026-08-28 · 4 minute read

Quiet marble corridor in a small Ohio courthouse

A first court date in Logan can feel like walking into someone else's house. In a way, it is. Hocking County Municipal Court sits at 105 West Hunter Street. Common Pleas sits at 1 East Main Street, third floor, in the courthouse that still anchors downtown. Juvenile and Probate, under Judge Jonah M. Saving, share that building on the second floor. These are not anonymous suburban complexes. They are rooms where neighbors see neighbors, where the bailiff knows the calendar, and where a judge who lives in this community will decide the next step in a case. Etiquette is how you show you understand that.

Start with the simple things the clerk's office has already published. Municipal Court is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed from noon to 1:00 p.m. for lunch, and closed on federal holidays. When you come for a criminal or traffic date, report to the bailiff and sign in. Use the name on your paperwork, not a nickname. If the address is wrong, say so at the window so it can be corrected. Street parking near the building is free. Dress as if the hearing matters: business casual is what the court recommends even for jurors. Hats off, phones silenced, no arguments in the gallery. Firearms, knives, stun guns, and other weapons stay outside.

Common Pleas has its own local rules, worth reading before you ride in from Laurelville or down U.S. 33. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Children under thirteen are not permitted in the courtroom without the judge's permission, and children cannot be left unattended in the hall. That rule exists because Judge Jason Despetorich's docket includes sentencings and testimony no child needs to hear. The court encourages the public to work with attorneys to schedule hearings rather than arrive unprepared. Treat the magistrate, the bailiff, and the clerks as part of the court, because they are.

Judge Frederick T. Moses's Municipal Court calendar is specific enough that you can plan around it. Mondays and Wednesdays are State of Ohio cases. Tuesdays are City of Logan cases. Thursdays are specialized dockets. Fridays are civil cases and jury trials. Arraignments are generally Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. If you have a pending warrant, the court has set a morning window to be heard. Showing up on the wrong day, or an hour late, is not a small-town courtesy you can talk your way through. It is a failure to honor a judge who has already organized the week so that officers, prosecutors, and defendants are not sitting in the same room with nothing to do.

Counsel makes etiquette easier. A bondsman can tell you that you are due in court and that missing the date will forfeit the bond and produce a warrant. A bondsman is not a lawyer and does not give legal advice. An attorney from the Hocking County Bar can tell you where to sit, when to stand, whether you will enter a plea, and how to address the court. Let counsel speak unless the judge asks you a direct question. Do not argue with the prosecutor from the table. Do not approach the bench. Thank the court when you are excused. These habits are not theater. They are how a defendant shows Judge Moses, Judge Despetorich, and Judge Saving that the court's authority is understood.

If you posted bond through our office, treat the court date as the center of the week, not an errand you will squeeze in after a shift. Write the time down. Arrange a ride from Murray City or the hills so you are not on the shoulder of State Route 93 at 9:10. If an emergency will keep you away, it is counsel's job to contact the court, not a family member's job to leave a voicemail and hope. For everything that happens inside those two buildings on Hunter Street and Main Street, hire a lawyer, dress with respect, and be in the room before your name is called.
